I am *baby-snakes, the new admin :}
please send us a note if you'd like to join, to discuss hermit crabs, show art or stories related to hermit crabs, and promote proper keeping of land hermit crabs or marine hermit crabs.
much more update soon!
EDIT: hi everyone.. thanks so much to the
ok Im not even going to try to strike out any more numbers, everyone please congratulate our TENTH lovely member, yes thats right we have ten new members now. ^^ I am going to put up a news article soon -- and 'open' up the club!!! ^^ can't wait.... !!
DONT FORGET:
In the meantime though - all members - please feel free to:
1) submit art! this can be photographs of your own animals, or any art of any sort related to hermit crabs: writing, poetry, anything at all. I am thinking a of having a number of different categories in the gallery... While I am working that out though, anyone is definitely welcome to submit anything they wish, in a note! Additionally, I know that some people here keep other interesting animals than hermit crabs, maybe we can have a gallery for them also. I am going to put all this stuff up as votes and polls eventually, suggestions always welcome.
2) participate in the forum! go on over to the forum section of the journal page, if you wish. there are some places there where people can talk about their hermit crabs - (or other animals) introduce their names and stories, ask questions, or whatever. I am also working out all the 'bugs' haha in that too but just in the meantime, feel free to go over and start a thread. We will go from there.
3) ask a hermit crab question. keep crabs? have crabs? thinking of getting some crabs? got a question? concern? issue? suggestion? problem? solution? you dont have to be a member here to ask a question about hermit crabs. we will do our best to compile helpful crab links and resources for crab owners from the best sites we know. Our mission is happy hermit crabs and hermit crab keeping for all. ^^
In the meantime its very nice to meet everyone, and thanks for keeping an eye on *EverythingHermitCrab!
thanks again so very much to ~Shi676 and ~Tinman-20-Tinster for letting me help out :}

Hiya, guys. This is ~Shi676, and I'm the new Head Admin of the club!
And, we also have a new Co-Admin, ~Xenary. She owns hermit crabs as well, and has extreme knowledge of how to care for them, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask her.
Also, I feel like the last contest wasn't very... contesty. So, we're going to try a NEW contest.
I want someone to send me suggestions for contests. I don't care who it is, but the contest MUST be hermit crab related.
Examples are:
Best Crabitat(hermit crab set up)
Most Photogenic Crab
Prettiest Shell
Prettiest Crab
Etc, etc.
If you want to suggest ANYTHING for the contest, please note either the club, or my main account.
--------------------------
I would like everyone to submit pictures of their hermit crabs.

they were given to me by a friend who had them in less than favorable conditions, and are now very well taken care of. ^^

*sigh*
when i have the time i'll see if i can hunt down my camera for pictures.
and wow, thats an interesting question.. usually its a challenge to keep them warm, not cool.. *thinking*.. // that's really a perfect question to ask the HCA, (link in my sig) they also have a lot of archived stuff that people have already asked about.. the people are super nice. Im interested to know the answer to that one myself :}}
I think crabs are made to handle some heat, up to a point.. (110 is up there!) probably heat is better for them than cold, cause they can just dig down and get cooler in the sand... it does seem that in your case, if they have good deep sand or what have you to dig in, that is good and damp, that should be a bit cooler than the air, and they can hopefully dig down to cool off.... :}} but thats a great question, and I would ask the HCA for sure. If you would like, I will ask them for you, and post the answer here. ^^

my tank is tiny, not sure about dimensions. but ive given them some branches to try and increase their traveling/moving area, which they seem to like quite a bit. My parents arent exactly thrilled with my adoption of the other two to make sure the first one wasnt lonely, and i dont have the money to buy a larger tank with college coming up (damn expensive tuition).
so to say the least, i need a cheap alternative, not like some of the modified USBfan to make a crabitat airconditioner that i've seen...
what i've been doing is just soaking the sand, and putting their crab-cave partially underground, and they seem to be hanging out in there...so i'm assuming its cooler, and i'm hoping the humidity is high enough there (since its partially enclosed by the cave, and insulated by wet sand) to make sure they're okay while i leave the top open to cool off...
its only hit about...93 F at the moment...and their air temp reads about 86 peak day, and substrate temp is around 75-80 ish...so i must be doing something right at the moment...we'll see how well it does later.

Yes, it is very sad when we lose a Hermie. I look forward to learning more about these little creatures and how to better care for them to avoid another death.
