DONT FORGET: :ambulance: having a hermie emergency? have any hermie questions? want to meet other people who are -really- serious about their hermit crabs? pay a visit to the link in my sig, HCA. (link here -----> [link]) if you have crabs to put up for adoption into good homes, you can post there without being a member... but you can join up real quick to ask a question of the members, about feeding, molting, how to set up their habitat, or any related hermit questions you might possibly have. its really worth it.

In the meantime though - all members - please feel free to:

1) submit art! this can be photographs of your own animals, or any art of any sort related to hermit crabs: writing, poetry, anything at all. I am thinking a of having a number of different categories in the gallery... While I am working that out though, anyone is definitely welcome to submit anything they wish, in a note! Additionally, I know that some people here keep other interesting animals than hermit crabs, maybe we can have a gallery for them also. I am going to put all this stuff up as votes and polls eventually, suggestions always welcome.

2) participate in the forum! go on over to the forum section of the journal page, if you wish. there are some places there where people can talk about their hermit crabs - (or other animals) introduce their names and stories, ask questions, or whatever. I am also working out all the 'bugs' haha in that too but just in the meantime, feel free to go over and start a thread. We will go from there.

3) ask a hermit crab question. keep crabs? have crabs? thinking of getting some crabs? got a question? concern? issue? suggestion? problem? solution? you dont have to be a member here to ask a question about hermit crabs. we will do our best to compile helpful crab links and resources for crab owners from the best sites we know. Our mission is happy hermit crabs and hermit crab keeping for all. ^^

In the meantime its very nice to meet everyone, and thanks for keeping an eye on *EverythingHermitCrab! ;) more update soon. ^^

FAQ All Members

Hiya, guys. This is ~Shi676, and I'm the new Head Admin of the club! :D If you didn't read the last journal, ~Tinman-20-Tinster was starting a new chapter in her life, and found herself unable to keep caring for her Hermit Crabs, as well has having no time for the club. So, she gave the club to me. :)
And, we also have a new Co-Admin, ~Xenary. She owns hermit crabs as well, and has extreme knowledge of how to care for them, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask her. :)

Also, I feel like the last contest wasn't very... contesty. So, we're going to try a NEW contest.

I want someone to send me suggestions for contests. I don't care who it is, but the contest MUST be hermit crab related.

Examples are:
Best Crabitat(hermit crab set up)
Most Photogenic Crab
Prettiest Shell
Prettiest Crab
Etc, etc.

If you want to suggest ANYTHING for the contest, please note either the club, or my main account. :)
--------------------------

I would like everyone to submit pictures of their hermit crabs. :) If you would like to submit something, end it in a note to the club with the title "Submit" and either I, or ~Xenary, will get it on here as soon as we can. :)

Head Admin: ~Shi676

mm...i have three hermit crabs. one is two years old (at least counting from teh point when he was bought), and the other two are fairly new, but they seem to be fairly happy, and they have survived molts.

they were given to me by a friend who had them in less than favorable conditions, and are now very well taken care of. ^^
that's excellent, its always so great to hear about happy hermit crabs ^^ congrats on doing a good job with them!:rose::heart:

I'm just trying to figure out how to get them to survive the summer heat here. ><; it gets to around 110 in the peak of summer, and i'm not always home. but if i put anything cool in their tank, like a small water bottle, their humidity drops REALLY far. like...10 percent.

*sigh*

when i have the time i'll see if i can hunt down my camera for pictures.
Id love to see some.. feel free to watch the club, if you want to join and submit anything.. (but you dont have to be a member to talk about hermit crabs here )

and wow, thats an interesting question.. usually its a challenge to keep them warm, not cool.. *thinking*.. // that's really a perfect question to ask the HCA, (link in my sig) they also have a lot of archived stuff that people have already asked about.. the people are super nice. Im interested to know the answer to that one myself :}}

I think crabs are made to handle some heat, up to a point.. (110 is up there!) probably heat is better for them than cold, cause they can just dig down and get cooler in the sand... it does seem that in your case, if they have good deep sand or what have you to dig in, that is good and damp, that should be a bit cooler than the air, and they can hopefully dig down to cool off.... :}} but thats a great question, and I would ask the HCA for sure. If you would like, I will ask them for you, and post the answer here. ^^

ah. its a five gallon tank apparently. but the crabbies arent huge. about 4-5 inches of substrate consisting of like...1/5 calcisand, 4 handfuls of rainbow aquarium gravel that i cant seem to fish out (my friend hand him in the gravel. poor crabbie surface molted), and 4/5 riverbed sand, which they love. has an undetank heater i turn on at night because the temp drops to the 40s
could you ask them for me? that would be greatly appreciated.

my tank is tiny, not sure about dimensions. but ive given them some branches to try and increase their traveling/moving area, which they seem to like quite a bit. My parents arent exactly thrilled with my adoption of the other two to make sure the first one wasnt lonely, and i dont have the money to buy a larger tank with college coming up (damn expensive tuition).

so to say the least, i need a cheap alternative, not like some of the modified USBfan to make a crabitat airconditioner that i've seen...

what i've been doing is just soaking the sand, and putting their crab-cave partially underground, and they seem to be hanging out in there...so i'm assuming its cooler, and i'm hoping the humidity is high enough there (since its partially enclosed by the cave, and insulated by wet sand) to make sure they're okay while i leave the top open to cool off...

its only hit about...93 F at the moment...and their air temp reads about 86 peak day, and substrate temp is around 75-80 ish...so i must be doing something right at the moment...we'll see how well it does later.
OMG I read about this in HCA, and I am soooo excited@

Im so sorry to hear about your little one! :tears: its so very sad when they pass away  One of the central purposes of this club is to prevent exactly that... Hermit crabs can be sensitive and their needs are complex and rarely explained well by those who sell them... many of them dont make it, and its always sad.. if I accomplish nothing else with this club, I wish to connect people with the very latest crab info and how to help them stay happy and healthy for a very long time  as well as spreading the hermie love :^^

so, happy you are here. if you do find yourself with any questions about what might have happened, or how to prevent it with your other guy, please check the link in my sig: (if you haven't already been there! its popular with herm keepers!) they are thrilled to answer any hermie issues for anyone, anytime, and there is also libraries worth of archived information there from crab keepers all over the world.:heart: welcome here!

Thank you very much, I think I shall check out that website!

Yes, it is very sad when we lose a Hermie. I look forward to learning more about these little creatures and how to better care for them to avoid another death.

Thanks for your favorite on my Reef stamp. I didn't know there was a hermit crab club. I have a crab named Newton who likes to "discover gravity" (read; fall off of things.) He is a little crab with a huge personality.
thats so cool :aww: thats one of my favorite things about hermit crabs.. they are so small, (some of them) but they can have such big personality.... :}} I have some crabs that do that too, they climb on something and then fling themselves off...:omg: I think they just enjoy it.... this won't be a hugely active club, I have just taken over from the previous owners, but I would like to do some news articles on caring for them- feeding, molting, etc... my main goal as the new admin is education and fun with crabs ^^ since you own one you are very welcome to join!:heart: there will be news articles and features mostly. ^^

How can i submit art?
Hey:  I will put up an official thing about it soon. What you do is submit your picture(s) into your gallery - and then send a note to the club with the link(s).. titled "submit".

I have some different categories for submissions: regular pictures of crabs.. really extra artistic/well done pictures.. funny pictures.. etc. so just submit what you want, and I will note you back about it. I really encourage you to submit the very nicest ones that you take! I really want to show the very happiest, healthiest crabs possible here.. :}} but ask me if you are not sure.
